HIV Advocacy Organizations Launch Online Resource

Windy City Times-Informing people with HIV and their care providers about the federal Affordable Care Act is the goal of a new website, HIVHealthReform.org. Funded by a MAC AIDS Fund grant, the site is a collaborative effort by AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC), Project Inform, the Center for Health Law and Policy Innovation of Harvard Law School/Treatment Access Expansion Project, the HIV Medicine Association, and San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Though there's been plenty of media focus on the Affordable Care Act, it's been hard to find the facts about what it will really mean on the ground for those living with HIV," said John Peller, AFC's vice president of policy. "People with HIV stand to benefit tremendously from health reform, and they also face unique challenges in the upcoming transition, and this website will help them learn more about it. The portal also has state-specific blogs that detail progress on the implementation of HIV-related efforts under the law. In addition, it serves as an advocacy resource forFor More Information Visit:http://www.hivhealthreform.org/

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

Among all racial/ethnic groups, African Americans bear the greatest burden of HIV in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 16 black men and 1 in 32 black women will be diagnosed with HIV infection during their lifetimes. In 2009, blacks made up 14% of the US population but accounted for nearly half (44%) of all new HIV infections. Recent CDC data showed an alarming 48% increase in new HIV infections from 2006 to 2009 among young, black men who have sex with men (MSM), aged 13 to 29 years. Black women, most of whom are infected through heterosexual contact, are far more affected by HIV than women of other races. The rate of new HIV infections for black women is more than 15 times as high as that of white women, and more than 3 times as high as that of Latino women...Full Story:http://www.cdc.gov/Features/BlackHIVAIDSAwareness/

HIV Infection Rate Increases In Elderly

The number of persons aged 50 years and older living with HIV/AIDS has been increasing in recent years. This increase is partly due to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), which has made it possible for many HIV-infected persons to live longer, and partly due to newly diagnosed infections in persons over the age of 50. As the US population continues to age, it is important to be aware of specific challenges faced by older Americans and to ensure that they get information and services to help protect them from infection...Full Story:http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/over50/index.htm

The 40-year-old man sued the city in 2010, claiming he was denied a police officer job solely because he has the virus. Atlanta attorneys argued there are other officers on the force with HIV, and said the police department does not have a blanket policy disqualifying candidates with the virus.
