HI-V Donations

Current economic realities make performing the mandates of AIDSNET's charter on a day-by-day basis even more challenging.  As unemployment and job growth remains stagnant, budgets within the Commonwealth of PA and the Federal Government are receiving even more scrutiny due to reduced revenues from taxes and fees.  We are finding funding for programs that are vital to each community regularly reviewed, challenged and often reduced, if not eliminated.  This is particularly true in the areas of prevention, awareness and education.

In order for AIDSNET to maintain acceptable standards in these three areas and to assure our place in the community until HIV/AIDS is eliminated we must look to the generosity of individuals within our community.  Please assist us in continuing the work already started by contributing to AIDSNET.

Your donations will allow us to address the needs of those already infected and to strive to reduce the likelihood of others being infected in the future.

Proof That HIV Causes AIDS

Before HIV infection became widespread in the human population, AIDS defining infections were rare, and almost exclusively in individuals with immune suppression, such as chemotherapy and certain types of cancers. However, a marked increase in the number of cases of AIDS defining illnesses was first recognized in the early 1980s in otherwise healthy homosexual men. Adding to the oddity, these men had no recognized cause for immune suppression. An infectious cause of AIDS was suggested by geographic clustering of cases, links among cases by sexual contact, mother-to-infant transmission, and transmission by blood transfusion. Later, isolation of HIV from patients with AIDS strongly suggested that this virus was the cause of AIDS.
Since the early 1980s, HIV and AIDS have been repeatedly linked in time, place and population group; the appearance of HIV in the blood supply has preceded or coincided with the occurrence of AIDS cases in every country and region where AIDS has been noted. Individuals of all ages and risk groups have all developed AIDS with only one common denominator - infection with HIV. These groups include:

  • men who have sex with men, infants born to HIV-infected mothers, heterosexual women and men
  • hemophiliacs
  • recipients of blood and blood products
  • people occupationally exposed to HIV-tainted blood
  • male and female injection drug users

Denialists frequently cite the well-known phenomenon of some individuals with HIV living healthily for long periods without treatment as evidence that HIV does not cause AIDS. However, the existence of these rare individuals do not in fact disprove the science on HIV/AIDS. We debunked that myth here. Also, despite denialist claims to the contrary, research on how these individuals' immune systems control HIV for longer than usual has in fact been a priority and several studies have shed light on the mechanisms involved. A new study has now found slight differences in five amino acids in the HLA-B protein between long-term non-progressors and people who do not control HIV for longer than normal.

You can read a Reuters report on the study here.
